Can You Post Links on Reddit? What to Check First

A Link post makes one destination the main content of the submission. A text post keeps the explanation on Reddit and can include a hyperlink in the body. A comment can also contain a relevant link when it directly supports the discussion. These are three different contexts, not three ways around the same community rule.

Reddit's current posting guide shows a Link option in the editor, but it also says that not every community enables every post option. Community settings let moderators control which post types are available. Start by opening the target community instead of assuming that a format you used elsewhere will appear again.

On reddit.com, open the relevant community and choose Create a post. Select Link if that option is available, add a descriptive title, paste the destination, complete any required flair or tags, and review the preview. On the mobile app, use the Create control inside the community and choose from the post options Reddit shows there.

Before selecting Post, confirm that the destination matches the title and that the community permits the topic and format. You cannot edit a post title after publishing, so check it before submission. If the Link option is missing, do not switch formats merely to evade the restriction.

In Reddit's Rich Text editor, select the words you want to link and use the link control. In the Markdown editor, write the label in square brackets followed by the full URL in parentheses, such as [Reddit Help](https://support.reddithelp.com/). Plain URLs beginning with http:// or https:// are also turned into links.

Use link text that tells the reader what will open. Do not hide the destination behind a misleading label. A comment link should answer the post or support a specific point; adding the same unrelated URL to many discussions can create spam risk.

The community may have disabled Link posts, limited posting to approved members, required a different post type, or added account conditions. Reddit may also show a rule warning through Post Check or an account requirement through Poster Eligibility. Those two messages are related but not identical.

Post Check points out a possible community-rule issue and lets you review the guidance. Poster Eligibility can identify an account condition that prevents posting. Read the exact message Reddit displays. WhereToPost cannot prove that your account meets a private or changing requirement.

Technical link support and promotional permission are different checks. A community may allow Link posts for news or research while restricting founder launches, affiliate links, surveys, repeated domains, or links that mainly benefit the poster.

If you benefit from the destination, disclose that relationship when it matters and make the contribution useful without forcing a click. Do not move a blocked product link into a comment, disguise yourself as a customer, ask for upvotes, or repeat the same URL across unrelated communities.
