Reddit Self-Promotion Rules: How to Check Before You Post

Self-promotion is broader than dropping a homepage link. A launch announcement, founder update, newsletter, portfolio, survey, demo video, waitlist, case study, or request for product feedback may all be treated as promotional when you benefit from the attention. The exact label matters less than the community's expectations and the purpose of the post.

Start with a simple test: would the post still help the reader if the product name and link disappeared? If the answer is no, the post is probably relying on promotion rather than contribution. That does not automatically make it forbidden, but it means you need an explicit community format that welcomes it.

You may still find old advice built around a fixed posting ratio. Treat a ratio as a personal reminder to contribute, not as permission. It cannot override Reddit's platform rules, the current community rules, or a moderator decision.

Open the target subreddit instead of relying on a rule summary from memory. Read the visible rules, the community description, pinned moderator posts, and any recurring promotion or feedback threads. Search for words such as self-promotion, external links, surveys, launches, feedback, affiliate links, newsletters, and repeated domains.

Open Reddit's native posting page on the day you plan to publish. Recheck the community, post type, flair, title, body, link, and any eligibility or rule messages.
