What Is User Flair on Reddit?

User flair appears beside your username when you post or comment in a community that uses it. Reddit describes it as text or an icon, and every community has its own set of flairs created by its moderators. A label selected in one subreddit therefore does not become a universal label on your Reddit account.

The meaning also comes from the community, not from Reddit as a whole. One subreddit may use flair for location or interests, another may use it for verified roles or event teams, and another may not use user flair at all. Read the local rules or flair instructions before assuming what a label means.

Reddit uses the word flair for two separate community features. User flair labels the person and appears next to a username. Post flair labels a submission and appears with that post. Both are configured by moderators, but they are selected in different places and can have different requirements.

If Reddit asks for flair while you are creating a post, it usually means post flair. If you want to change the label beside your name, use the community's user-flair control instead. Changing one does not automatically change the other.

Open the exact community where you want the flair. On the current reddit.com interface, Reddit's official instructions place USER FLAIR on the right side of the community page. Use the edit icon beside that area, choose one of the available flairs, and apply the selection. Some templates may let you edit the text; others are fixed.

Make the change from the community page, not from a general account page. If you are checking several subreddits, repeat the process inside each one because the choices and permissions are separate. A flair that is available in one community may not exist in the next.

On Old Reddit, the current official path is also in the community sidebar. Look under the reader count for Show my flair on this subreddit, then use edit when that option is available. The wording and layout differ from the current interface, but the setting is still local to the community.

In the official Reddit app, open the community itself and use the overflow menu in the upper-right corner. Choose Change user flair, select an available option, and tap APPLY. These steps apply to the user label beside your name, not to the flair chosen while composing a post.

If the community has not made a user flair available to you, Reddit may show No user flair assigned instead of a list you can choose from. Returning to your profile or reinstalling the app will not create community permissions that the moderators have not enabled.

Visual details can differ between desktop and the app. Reddit's moderator documentation notes, for example, that user-flair background colors shown on reddit.com do not appear in the mobile app. Check the text and meaning of the flair rather than assuming its styling will look identical on every device.

A missing USER FLAIR or Change user flair option usually means the community has not allowed members to assign it themselves. Reddit's user-facing help says that when the option is absent, only the moderators can set it. The community may also have no templates, may reserve particular labels for moderators, or may allow a selection without allowing you to rewrite its text.

Do not choose a misleading label because the one you want is unavailable. First read any flair instructions or community rules. If the community explicitly uses moderator-assigned flair and the label matters, contact the moderators through the community's normal channel with a brief, factual request. A request is not a guarantee that the flair will be granted.

If you can select a flair but cannot edit its wording, that can be intentional. Moderator settings control whether each template is user-editable. Use the supplied text or choose another permitted option rather than trying to work around the restriction.

A flair may carry real meaning inside a community, but the meaning depends on how that community manages it. Some flairs are selected freely, some are editable, and some are assigned only by moderators. Seeing the same word beside two users does not tell you which process produced it unless the community explains the system.

User flair does not replace the posting rules. It does not prove that your account meets a karma or account-age condition, that links are allowed, or that a promotional post will stay up. When you are ready to post, open the exact community's native composer, check the current rules and available format, and read Reddit's messages before submitting.

It also does not create an endorsement outside the community. Avoid presenting a local flair as a Reddit-wide credential or as approval from moderators unless the community explicitly describes it that way and you can state the context accurately.

A short check prevents most flair confusion. Start with the exact subreddit and the device you are using, then separate what the interface allows from what the label actually means.
