How to Post a Video on Reddit

Open the exact subreddit before preparing the upload. Reddit can then show the post types, title rules, body fields, flair, tags, and account messages that apply to that destination. A Video option available in one community says nothing about another community's settings.

Reddit's current community controls let moderators enable Text, Links, Images and Galleries, Videos, AMAs, Polls, and Reposts separately. The same page says video posts are not allowed in private or mature (18+) communities. Moderators may have controls ordinary members do not, so an older moderator post is not proof that you can use the same format today.

Read the visible community rules as well as the composer controls. The Video button only means the format is available at that moment. It does not approve the topic, promotional intent, title, account eligibility, or any link you add in the surrounding text.

On the current reddit.com interface, open the target subreddit and select Create in the upper-right area or Create a post beside the community name. Starting from the community keeps the destination visible and lets Reddit load that community's available formats before you add the file.

Write a clear title and useful description, then select Video in the rich text editor and choose the correct clip from your computer. Let the upload finish and review the preview. Confirm that the image, beginning, ending, orientation, and audio are the version you intended to share before moving on.

Complete any required flair and apply spoiler or mature-content labels accurately. Read every warning in the composer. Select Post only after the subreddit, title, context, video, labels, and rules all match. If Video never appears, use the troubleshooting section instead of changing formats as a workaround.

In Reddit's current Android app, the Create control is at the bottom of the screen. On iOS it can appear in the upper-right area. You can also start from inside a community. Open the target subreddit first when possible, tap Create, and confirm that the correct destination remains selected.

Choose Video, then select the clip through your device controls. The picker and permission prompt come from your phone, but the post still needs an accurate title and any description, flair, or tags required by the community.

Wait until the app shows a usable preview, then check the clip and audio before tapping Post. A missing Video option does not automatically mean the app is broken. The community may have disabled the format, the community type may not support native video, your account may not have posting access, or Reddit may be showing another requirement that must be resolved first.

A native Reddit video and a link to a video hosted elsewhere are different post formats. Select Video when you want to upload the file directly to Reddit. Select Link when you want the post to open a public video page on another site. The community can allow one format and disable the other because Videos and Links are separate moderator settings.

Use the format that honestly matches the post. A native upload keeps playback on Reddit; an external link sends the reader elsewhere and may need context about the destination. If Videos are disabled, an external link is not automatically acceptable. Its domain, topic, and purpose must still fit the rules.

Do not use a hosted link to bypass a missing Video button or re-upload media without permission. Follow any preferred format or recurring-thread instruction instead of treating the composer as the entire rulebook.

Reddit's current Premium help page says non-Premium accounts can upload videos up to 15 minutes and Premium accounts can upload videos up to 30 minutes. Treat those as platform upload limits, not a recommendation to use the full time. A community can still prefer shorter posts, restrict the topic, or disable native video entirely.

Do not buy Premium as a workaround for a missing Video option. The longer allowance does not override community settings, private or mature-community restrictions, eligibility, or local rules. If a clip is too long, edit it or use an external link only when the community allows that format.

Before submitting, play the preview from the beginning and inspect a few points through the clip. Check that the intended audio is present, the frame is readable on a phone, and the title explains what the viewer will see. Add captions or a short written summary when they make the video easier to understand, but do not add claims that the clip does not support.

Start with what Reddit is showing now, not a remembered rule or an old tutorial. If the Video control is absent, confirm the selected subreddit and inspect its available post types. Reddit's current settings documentation specifically excludes native video posts in private and mature (18+) communities, and other communities can disable Videos for ordinary members.

Next, read the access and eligibility message. A restricted community may limit who can post, and Reddit's Poster Eligibility or Post Check can identify a condition or rule before submission. If Video is available but the file will not finish uploading, confirm that the clip is within your account's current length allowance, retry on a stable connection, and use the exact error Reddit displays. Explain the useful point instead of hiding a sales pitch, disclose your connection when the video covers your own product or work, and complete required flair, spoiler, or mature-content labels.
