What Is Reddit Karma?

Karma is the number Reddit builds from upvotes that your posts and comments receive from other users. It is not something you set, buy, or earn at a fixed rate, and it does not map one-to-one to any guarantee about your account or your posts.

Think of it as a history of past engagement rather than a balance you spend. The number can change as users vote on your content, and it says nothing by itself about whether a new post fits a specific community.

A profile can show post karma and comment karma separately, because votes on submissions and votes on comments are different kinds of engagement. A user with many helpful comments may have a different mix than a user who mostly submits links.

Reddit may surface account signals such as age, karma, or verified email when it checks whether you can post. The important reading is the current message on the native posting page, not a comparison of your numbers with someone else's.

A high karma number does not prove your account is in good standing, that your topic fits a community, or that your link is allowed. A low number does not prove the opposite either. Communities can add their own conditions, moderators can remove posts for their own stated reasons, and automated systems can act on signals that are never shown publicly.

Treating karma as a permission system leads to the wrong question. The useful question is not "how much do I have" but "what does this community currently require, and what does Reddit's posting page show me right now."

When you open a community's native posting page, Reddit may show a Poster Eligibility message that names account conditions, or a Post Check message that points to a community rule. These messages are about the current situation, not about a historical total.
