How to Get Comment Karma on Reddit

Reddit separates post karma from comment karma on your profile. Comment karma reflects votes on replies you leave in discussions, while post karma reflects votes on posts you submit. Reddit says the displayed number is not a one-to-one count of votes, so there is no reliable formula to calculate how many comments or upvotes you need.

You can view the breakdown on your profile. On desktop, Reddit says you can hover over the total karma on the profile card; in the mobile app, open your profile and use the About tab. The breakdown helps you understand where the number came from, but it is not a posting license or a measure of whether your next reply is useful.

Start with communities about subjects you know from work, study, hobbies, or direct experience. Read the rules and recent discussions before commenting. A smaller relevant conversation is usually a better place to contribute than a popular thread where you have nothing specific to add.

Look for a question you can answer, a confusing step you can clarify, or a tradeoff you can explain. The goal is not to appear everywhere. It is to make one discussion more useful for the person who asked and for later readers who find the thread.

Lead with the answer, then explain why it applies. Give the next step, an example, or a limitation when it helps. A useful comment can be short, but it should still make sense to someone who reads it without guessing what you meant.

Stay close to the thread's topic and tone. If you have a relationship to a product, company, or resource you mention, say so plainly. Most early participation does not need a product mention or a link at all. A comment should remain useful even when every promotional element is removed.

Do not ask for upvotes, join vote exchanges, coordinate voting, buy karma, or use additional accounts to support your own comments. Reddit's policy against disrupting communities covers manual and automated vote manipulation, including coordinated votes and multiple-account schemes.

Do not copy the same reply across threads or post a burst of shallow comments just to create activity. Reddit's spam guidance warns against repeated or unsolicited mass engagement and repeatedly sharing content to gain karma quickly. A slower pattern of relevant replies is safer because each comment exists for the discussion rather than for the number.

Pick a small number of conversations you can follow properly. Read the community rules, write the clearest answer you can, and return when the original poster asks a follow-up. Over time, notice which replies generated useful questions or added information to the thread, then improve the substance of your next comment rather than copying the wording.

You do not need a daily comment quota. A quota can push you toward low-value activity when no suitable discussion is available. Some days the right move is to read, save a useful thread, or skip commenting entirely. Consistency means returning with real help across days, not forcing a number of submissions.

Some communities use account conditions, but there is no universal comment-karma target for Reddit. A community may consider account age, karma, verified email, its own rules, or other signals. Another user's number and an old advice thread cannot prove what your account needs today.
